Dumbing down America is destroying our country. Our young people are functional illiterates. We are a nation of parrots, spouting whatever we hear.

Since education plays a vital role in a nation’s future, schools must teach our children well. Children learn by reading, math, grammar, and history. They also learn patriotism and national pride from our inspiring history. Also, they learn how to be good citizens. Every great civilization in history made education a priority.

So, ruining traditional education undermines American liberty. To this end, communism weaken our educational system through various strategies. Dumbing down American education proves communism is successful in  corrupting Western society.

In this article, we investigate how communism highjacked American education. The communist infiltration of American education manifests in five areas.

  1. Promoting Communist Ideology Among the Young.

Communist ideology infiltrated traditional fields of study. Once in place, Marxist philosophy replaced classical academia. Politically correct speech censored conservative thought and debate.

  1. Reducing the Young Generation’s Exposure to Traditional Culture.

Progressive education views traditional history and classical literature as irrelevant and useless. This paved the way for “diversity.”

  1. Lowering Academic Standards Starting in Primary School.

Progressive education dumbs down content. As a result, youth are functional illiterates. They are unable to think critically. This makes students susceptible to communism’s deceptions.

  1. Indoctrinating Young Students with Deviated Notions.

Over time, our children are no longer able to identify and correct false concepts.

  1. Feeding Students’ Selfishness, Greed, and Indulgence.

Progressive education opposes authority and tradition. At the same time, education inflates children’s egos and sense of entitlement. Thus, this reduces their ability to understand different opinions. Ultimately, this undermines their psychological growth.

Communism is achieving its goals in all five areas.

Dumbing Down Primary and Secondary Education

Communism’s influence in education is pervasive. Progressive education undermines children’s intellectual development and maturity. This makes them susceptible to leftist influences in college. As a result, young adults cannot reason or think critically.

Progressive education also destroys students’ traditional beliefs and morals. In its place, moral relativism skews their moral compass. This occurs throughout the educational system. Education’s complexity makes it impossible for parents to guard against the trend.

In 1985, KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov revealed how dangerous communism is.

“Even if you start right now, here this minute, you start educating [a] new generation of Americans, it will still take you fifteen to twenty years to turn the tide of ideological perception of reality back to normalcy and patriotism.”

Even as communist regimes fell, communism’s subversion in the West did not stop. Communism targeted education. They took over education to promote their theories on education and parenting.

Dumbing Down the Republic

The United States is a constitutional republic. The voting public elects lawmakers and school board members. Only a well-educated republic is beneficial. For example, suppose voters are not well-versed in historical, political, economic, and social issues. In that case, they will not elect officials committed to the country’s best interests. This puts the country in a dangerous situation.

In 1983, the US Department of Education wrote the report A Nation at Risk.

For our country to function, citizens must understand complex issues. Education helps form these common understandings. Thomas Jefferson said:

“I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them but to inform their discretion.”

Individuals with little critical thinking abilities are unable to recognize deception.  Thus, when communist ideology penetrates educational systems, students are vulnerable to manipulation.

Unfortunately, a rising tide of mediocrity is eroding our educational foundations. This threatens our future as a nation. If a foreign country forced a mediocre educational system on us, we would view it as an act of war. As it stands, we allowed this to happen. We squandered the gains in student achievement in the wake of the Sputnik challenge. Moreover, we dismantled essential support systems that made those gains possible. We committed an act of educational disarmament.

Paul Copperman said, “For the first time in the history of our country, the educational skills of one generation will not surpass, will not equal, will not even approach, those of their parents.”

A Nation of Functional Illiterates

Also, the report cites shocking facts. 23 million American adults are functionally illiterate. They only possess basic reading and comprehension skills. The rate of functional illiteracy is 13 percent among 17-year-olds. It may be as high as 40 percent among minority youth.

From 1963 to 1980, SAT scores declined dramatically. Verbal scores dropped 50 points. Math scores dropped 40 points. “Many 17-year-olds do not possess the skills we expect of them. Nearly 40 percent cannot draw conclusions from written material. Only one-fifth can write a persuasive essay. Only one-third can solve a math problem.”

Mark Bauerlein showed knowledge gaps in American students. In a history exam, 57 percent of students scored “below basic.” Only 1 percent achieved an “advanced” score. One question asked which country was a US ally in World War II. 52 percent chose Germany, Japan, or Italy instead of the Soviet Union. Thus, the decline of American education is noticeable. Since the 1990s, the term “dumbing down” appears in many books. For example, John Taylor Gatto said that a fifth-grade textbook from 1850 today would be considered college level. (Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling)

A Generation of Non-thinkers

Also, the critical thinking ability of American students also declined. American scholar Thomas Sowell observed: “It is not merely that Johnny can’t read, or even that Johnny can’t think. Johnny doesn’t know what thinking is because thinking is so often confused with feeling in many public schools.”

The reason student grades declined is not because they are less intelligent. It is because communism carried out a war against them, using education as its weapon. Charlotte Thomson Iserbyt said, “The reason Americans do not understand this war is because it was fought in secret — in our schools, targeting our children who are captive in classrooms.”

Conclusion

Unfortunately, progressive education in America is not progressing our society. If anything, it is destroying our nation. Progressive education is nothing more than indoctrination for communism. Only a return to classical education can reverse these alarming trends. It will take two or three generations, however, to turn education around. There are no quick solutions. Just as communists worked for the last 100 years to take over education, American patriots will need to work for the next 100 years to take back education. America has already lost two generations to this communist threat. When will we begin?
